In December, 2006, Màrius Rubiralta, Rector of Universitat de Barcelona, Senén Barro, Rector of Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, and Emilio Botín, Chairman of Banco Santader, signed a Collaboration Agreement for the creation of an Ibero-American university network in order to promote entrepreneurial enterprising.
As Ibero-American Network of Universities for Business Incubation, RedEmprendia's set-up process culminated in a meeting that was held at Universitat de Barcelona, in May, 2008, with the involvement of Universitat de Barcelona, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and Banco Santander, as well as other RedEmprendia's founding member universities: Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad de Cantabria, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Universidade de São Paulo and Portal Universia, S.A. Màrius Rubiralta, Rector of Universitat de Barcelona, was elected as the first Chairman of the network, and Carlos Hernández-Sande, coordinator of the entrepreneurship program from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, was appointed Chairman of RedEmprendia's Technical Committee. On October 27, 2008, in presence of Mr. Rafael Martínez Díe, Notary Public from Madrid, and under Law 1/2002, the Ibero-American Network of Universities for Business Incubation was established as a non-profit organization with full legal capacity, being based in Avda. Cantabria, s/n, Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, Spain. RedEmprendia is registered in the National Registry of Associations belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Group 1, Section 1, with national number 595467. Together with RedEmprendia's founding members, other institutions entered the network as new members: Universitat de València, Universidade de Coimbra, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya, Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Mexico) and Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
In the general assembly that took place in May 11, 2011, five new memberships were approved: Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universitat Politècnica de València, Universidade do Porto and Universidade Federal de Rio Grande do Sul.
Currently, Senén Barro Ameneiro, former Rector of Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, is Chairman of the Board of Directors, and José Narro Robles, Rector of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, is Deputy Chairman. Arturo Torres, Associate Vice-President for Entrepreneurship of the Sistema Tecnológico de Monterrey, is Manager of RedEmprendia's Technical Committee.
